According to the study, Johnson & Johnson offers 71% protection against hospitalisation caused by the Delta variant and 67% against hospitalisation caused by the Beta variant
According to Gray, the study found that Johnson & Johnson offers up to 96% protection against death due to Covid-19. By Friday, 1.8 million South Africans had been vaccinated with the one-shot Johnson & Johnson jab, while 6.7 million had received their first injection of the two-dose Pfizer vaccine, about which new research was announced last week.
The vaccine also reduces the risk of getting infected with Covid-19 by 21% after the first dose and by 70% after the second dose, says Dr Ron Whelan, chief operating officer at Discovery Health.“The effectiveness of preventing someone from contracting Covid-19 is declining, but the impact on hospitalisation and death is still very, very good.”Pfizer is about 95% effective in preventing someone from contracting Covid-19 due to the original version of the virus.
