It is the first official confirmation that a national unity government – an idea that was suggested by some commentators at the time – was actively discussed at senior levels during the early days of the pandemic. “In practice though this sort of approach was not going to work for the operating style of any of the key people in positions of power at the time so it was something of a non-starter.”

In the run-up to Mr Johnson imposing a nationwide lockdown on 23 March, Mr Corbyn and Mr Ashworth were invited into Downing Street to secure Labour’s support for the unprecedented emergency powers the Prime Minister was about to announce.
