More than 5.3 million people were enrolled in the study from March 2020 and followed for at least three years
The TV series ‘Breathtaking’ tells the story of staff at an NHS hospital as Covid-19 arrives in Britain are still at a higher risk of death and serious illness three years after their infection, a study has found.
“We tend to think of infections as mostly short-term illnesses with health effects that manifest around the time of infection. Our data challenges this notion,” said researcher Ziyad Al-Aly , of Washington University. The researchers found a 5 per cent increased risk of suffering health complications in the third year after infection, compared to 16 per cent in the second year and 23 per cent in the first year. These cases were mostly connected to gastrointestinal, lung and nervous system problems.
The study also found that in the third year after infection, hospitalised Covid patients had a 34 per cent higher risk of organ complications - such as heart, kidney and neurological issues - compared with people who had not been infected. The study assessed the risk of death and 80 health conditions in people three years after being diagnosed with Covid.
