District 3, 5 and 7 are all up for grabs

In play is District 3 — which covers the downtown area, SJSU and Japantown neighborhoods and is often viewed as a launching pad for those seeking positions like mayor or county supervisor. Candidates there want to address the empty storefronts and blight that residents cite as a major problem.

“I have some radical, new ideas for housing and governance and public safety and to me this race is really about independence and nonpartisanship versus exclusive partnership,” said Smith. So far, the business-backed candidate has raised about $100,000 over the last year. The fight for East San Jose’s Alum Rock neighborhood is between two labor-backed in a race pitting a longtime policymaker against a newcomer.

Campos, who since leaving the Assembly in 2016 has worked on community matters like ramping up COVID testing in the neighborhood, said her political background will work to her advantage. In interviews, she said she wants to ensure that nonprofits and other organizations receiving federal pandemic recovery funds are free of charge for residents, as well as streamline the process of affordable housing.

“I was never supposed to this office,” said Ortiz, alluding to his past arrest. “Since then, I’ve gone on to be a neighborhood leader.” Ortiz has raised $78,375 over the previous year and has a labor-backed independent expenditure committee helping with an additional $112,750.Similar to District 5, the District 7 race is also between a politically experienced candidate and an outsider. Labor-backed incumbent Maya Esparza is up against a pro-business firefighter captain Bien Doan.
