HANOI : Only one Covid-19 patient remains in serious condition in Vietnam, a 43-year-old British pilot in Ho Chi Minh City who has spent more than two months on life support. On Friday , doctors linked to the case said the man is showing signs of recovery and on the road to getting well again.

The man, who works for Vietnam Airlines, is officially referred to as"Patient 91." He was admitted to Ho Chi Minh City Hospital for Tropical Diseases on March 18. The pilot has been kept alive via connection to an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine , a form of life support used when a person's lungs or heart are no longer able to fully function.Tran Binh Giang, director of Vietnam-Germany Hospital, who is directly involved in discussions about the pilot's case, told dpa that although his condition remains severe, the patient is making clear progress.

"Vietnam-Germany Hospital has prepared a lung transplant plan for the patient if necessary, but fortunately the patient's condition is improving. I think it's likely there will be no need for a lung transplant."He is now able to smile, move his hands and feet, and is practising physical therapy every day.

Vietnam has focused all available resources on saving the man, who has now tested negative for the virus, with costs totalling over US$215,000.
