A couple who fled Melbourne’s pandemic lockdowns for Queensland didn’t intend to return. But they did – and made money in the process.
We originally had it at $1.25 million, dropped it to a range of $1.15-$1.18 million and then got $1.2 million for it. It was a matter of timing. There was a lull and then there were more people looking at it. There was another apartment at a lower level also on the market. They went to beautiful Queensland, vowed they were never coming back.
Same floor, different apartment: The couple bought the three-bedroom apartment in Regency Towers at 2801/265 Exhibition Street for $1.2 million. We’re born-and-bred Queenslanders. I retired young, 17 years ago. My wife was in the fashion industry forever. We’d moved around quite a bit. I was involved in the property market. When I retired, I was happy to live here after being in Queensland, play golf and visiting the grandkids in Hobart occasionally. We also have a daughter who lives here.
In 2020, we were not getting any younger. We did not see our grandchildren once. In the middle of July at 3am, I woke and my wife was sitting up in bed, crying. She said: “We’ve got to get out of here. He’ll never let us see our grandchildren again.”I said: “Who?” “Daniel Andrews.” Within 48 hours we’d signed a contract to buy back in the Gold Coast, into a property we hadn’t seen. We bought up there at the ideal time – the market hadn’t moved in a decade.
We had direct flights from Brisbane or Gold Coast to Hobart. We re-established our relationships with our grandchildren in Hobart. We had a beach holiday for two years and seven months.I didn’t want to move. My wife said to me: “We should think about moving back.”I thought she was mad. I said I don’t have another move in me. I didn’t want to write a cheque for 5.5 per cent stamp duty which I knew went to [Daniel Andrews]’ coffers. That was really a bone of contention for me.
