The surge of death seen in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic in New York City was similar to the 1918 flu, researchers say.
“This tells us that these are comparable in terms of their impact,” Faust said."This virus has 1918 capacity."
The monthly death rates per 100,000 New Yorkers during the 61-day peak of the 1918 flu, and during the 61-day period examined during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic. The charts also show the death rates for the same months in the years leading up to the events. That larger relative increase reflects the fact that fewer New Yorkers were dying before COVID-19 than in the years leading up to the 1918 flu, thanks to improvements in public health and modern medicine.
