This sentiment is echoed by Syebvonne Nguyen nee Looi, 41, who volunteers to shop for the elderly members of her community, as well as help bring food-laden tuck shops on wheels to frontliners, such as paramedics in hospitals in her borough. “Before the lockdown on March 24, we anticipated people would be needing assistance. The local residents came together and volunteered to look after the needs of those within the borough,” said Syebvonne of the voluntary work she does as a member of Merton Covid-19 Mutual Aid, based in southwest London.Besides doing the shopping, she also called up people to make sure they did not feel lonely, picked up prescriptions for the housebound and walked dogs for residents who were in self-isolation.
