Lockdown and discharge from hospital have similar characteristics. They both should involve care coordination among all stakeholders to ensure effectiveness and prevent complications which may lead to readmission, writes Dr Brenda Kubheka.

It took my niece, who is in primary school, saying she is not going back to school when schools reopen for me to worry, think and then breathe.

She admitted to getting adequate information in large doses, which is good. I then asked if any of the messages in the primary and children’s TV channels talked specifically about what to do when going back to school, and the answer was a cold no. We have witnessed industries such as mining implementing stringent screening programmes to manage the risk towards workers returning to work. The reality is that employees are members of the society and they move the virus, hence the need for multisectoral collaborations.

It offers guidelines for a transition from hospital to home from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the US. Its strategy is based on engaging patients and family members to reduce adverse events and preventable readmissions.Include beneficiaries, including members of the community, such as school children and their parents, trade unions, service providers and regulators as full partners in the lockdown discharge planning process.

d. Explain test results. Keep everyone informed of the screening processes and any positive cases or others in self-quarantine without compromising people’s dignity and human rights. Transparency, collaborations and effective communication facilitate trust among stakeholders. What should we tell children before going back to school about sharing pens, lunch and possibly masks? Are some of the young leaners going to wear masks for the first time when they go back to school? Will they know how to take care of these masks when eating and wiping their noses? Are the bullies going to take other children’s masks instead of their money and sweets?Assess the transparency and objectivity of the Covid-19 information shared by politicians, health professionals and media...

Transparency and truthfulness is vital to avoid creating expectations which may be challenging to meet, and this also allows people to make informed decisions about their lives. There is evidence that awareness about Covid-19 is overwhelming among South Africans. Like my niece, others are anxious and uncertain about the future.

It will become vital for individuals to be informed about the reasons for providing such information, as well as the risks and benefits of doing so. Various departments should consult relevant experts in relevant subjects such as human rights to ensure that their processes and procedures do not violate human rights and other possible harms.
