Some 19,000 prisoners are expected to be released soon, from 240 centres across the country.

Correctional Services spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo says the department has begun a process of recalling parole board members to look at certain cases.“The parole boards will be coming back to the office across all management areas. I must stress that only those who qualify to be placed out, will be placed out. You must have done rehabilitation programmes, you must have been assessed by a social worker, psychologist, and other specialists.

Earlier this month, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced he was releasing 19,000 prisoners to curb the spread of COVID-19 in prisons and ease overcrowding.
