While the Gauteng government continues with its blitz to prepare for the spike in Covid-19 cases by increasing its bed and ward capacity – staff at a small clinic have been left reeling.
A month ago, workers at Skinner Street Clinic in Pretoria were allegedly told to vacate their premises in the Tshwane District Hospital complex as the hospital had been earmarked for designated Covid-19 services.
“Because our patients know us, when we bump into them in town, some will complain that they have been unable to get their chronic medication,” said one source. The provincial department of infrastructure development and property development also announced this week that it would provide 3 056 beds in its portfolio of facilities, as well as 1 126 beds from external entities.
Mosam said that, even under normal circumstances, patients’ access to public healthcare facilities was hampered by factors such as transport costs, being able to secure childcare services on the day of a clinic appointment, and being able to take time off from work.
