March 25, 2020 -- There's been a dramatic increase in the rate of COVID-19 cases, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today. The rate of new infections is doubling about every 3 days. In a news conference, Cuomo said the change in the infection rate is not encouraging.
He said one of his forecasters told him,"We were looking at a freight train coming across the country, and we're now looking at a bullet train.", as of March 24. New York City had 14,904 of those cases. Cuomo says he's worried that New York's rapidly rising infection rate could leave the state without enough hospital beds when the number of new cases reaches its height. He says the surge could reach its peak in 14 to 21 days. The governor says New York now has 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 beds in intensive care units . When the infection wave reaches its height, New York will need 140,000 hospital beds and 40,000 ICU beds."Those are troubling and astronomical numbers," Cuomo says,"and higher than previously projected." He says New York could also face a dire shortage of ventilators. He says the state normally has about 3,000 to 4,000 ventilators on hand. In recent days, state officials have obtained another 7,000. But Cuomo says when the COVID-19 surge reaches its peak, New York will need an additional 30,000 ventilators. Cuomo says the state will consider adding to its hospital capacity by using college campus dorms for patients, as well by converting the Jacob Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a temporary hospital. He's asking the federal government to send ventilators to New York now, and he says the state will ship them to other parts of the country when New York's COVID-19 surge eases.
