COVID-19 global tally reaches 4.9 million as Brazil fatalities surge
The global case tally for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 climbed to 4.9 million on Wednesday, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. The death toll rose to 323,637. More than 1.7 million people have recovered. The big overnight move was Brazil, which suffered its biggest death toll in a 24-hour period since the start of the outbreak with 1,179 people dying overnight. Brazil has 281,885 cases. The U.S. has the highest case toll at 1.

India is next with 106,886 cases and 3,303 fatalities, followed by Peru with 99,483 cases and 2,914 deaths.
