Genetics plays a critical role in determining whether a person can become severely ill with the disease. The results from a new study build on growing evidence. | Fin24
Genetic differences have been proven to put certain people at higher risk of severe Covid-19 than others, which may help to explain why two people can be affected very differently, even in the same household.
In a new study, researchers delved deeper and discovered that numerous genetic differences in individuals are linked to an increased risk of severe disease. The research, led by the University of Edinburgh in partnership with Genomics England, involved more than 57 000 people. After sequencing the genomes of nearly 7 500 patients from 224 intensive care units in the UK, the team found 16 new DNA changes associated with severe Covid-19.
