A covert US operation obtains a microwave weapon that could explain Havana Syndrome, linked to brain injuries reported by diplomats since 2016.

A mysterious weapon obtained in a covert US intelligence operation may help explain the long-debated ‘ Havana Syndrome ’. Havana Syndrome refers to a group of unexplained brain injuries. Victims reported sudden pressure in the head, loud sounds, dizziness, vision problems, hearing loss, and trouble with balance and memory.

The condition has affected American diplomats, spies, and military officers since 2016, reports a US news outlet. In 2024, an investigation suggested a possible link between Havana Syndrome incidents and a Russian intelligence agency, potentially involving directed-energy devices.Covert weapon discoveryHavana Syndrome was reported by US and Canadian government officials and military personnel, mostly while stationed overseas. The incidents were first reported in 2016 at the American Embassy in Havana, Cuba, and came to be known as Havana Syndrome. Those affected described a range of unusual symptoms. These included severe headaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness, nausea, and problems with balance and vision. Some individuals also reported hearing strange sounds or feeling intense pressure in their heads just before the symptoms began. In more serious cases, sufferers reported long-term neurological problems, including memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and other forms of cognitive dysfunction.Since around 2017, similar cases have been reported in other parts of the world. US intelligence officers, military personnel, diplomats, and even their family members have reported Havana Syndrome-like symptoms while stationed in countries such as China, India, and across Europe, as well as in Washington, D.C. Around 1,000 cases of the illness have been reported worldwide, though many remain unexplained. In 2024, a joint investigation by Insider, Der Spiegel, and CBS suggests a possible link between Havana Syndrome and a Russian intelligence unit. The probe points to Unit 29155, a military intelligence group allegedly linked to directed-energy attacks on US diplomats. While Moscow denied involvement and an NIH study later found no clear brain injuries, investigators say unit members were present in several cities during reported incidents.Microwave attack mysteryNow, a new investigation has revealed fresh details about the long-running probe into the mysterious illness that has affected US diplomats, intelligence officers, and military personnel for nearly a decade.According to a report by CBS News’ 60 Minutes, a classified US operation obtained a previously unknown microwave-based weapon that could help explain the unexplained brain injuries reported by officials since 2016. The device was allegedly purchased in 2024 by undercover Department of Homeland Security agents from a complex Russian criminal network in a Pentagon-funded mission that cost about $15 million.Sources told the program the weapon is small, portable, and designed to be concealed. Unlike conventional microwave devices, it does not generate noticeable heat or noise. The system can be programmed for different scenarios and remotely operated, producing a pulsed electromagnetic wave capable of penetrating walls, windows, and other structures over several hundred feet. The device has reportedly been tested for more than a year in a US military laboratory. Experiments on rats and sheep are said to have produced injuries consistent with symptoms reported by Havana Syndrome victims.Investigators also reviewed classified security footage allegedly showing suspected incidents, including one in Istanbul where two FBI agents and their families suddenly grabbed their heads in pain after a man carrying a backpack entered a restaurant. The findings have renewed debate over whether directed-energy weapons may be responsible for the unexplained neurological symptoms reported by hundreds of US personnel worldwide.
