State Applies to Hold Kenya Cult Leader for Another Seven WeeksKenyan state prosecutors have applied to keep cult leader Paul Mackenzie, his wife Rhoda Maweu and 28 other co-accused persons in custody for another 47 days, having already spent 90 days in police custody, Capital FM reports. This follows the exhumation of 425 bodies in the Shakhaola forest, suspected by police of being part of Mackenzie's cult. Over 600 more cult victims are reportedly still missing. Mackenzie allegedly "brainwashed" citizens into starving themselves to death, to "meet Jesus". Although his church was shut down in 2019, Mackenzie continued to attract the masses through his preaching of the "end times and fasting to go to heaven". The State plans to charge them with at least 12 offences that include; murder, counselling and aiding suicide, abduction, radicalisation, genocide, crimes against humanity and child cruelty, among others. During the court session, Mackenzie and his team momentarily tried to protest against State, saying they were being harassed and mistreated in the prison custody. Their chants of "Haki Yet" took the court by surprise, but their lawyer Wycliff Makasembo pleaded with them to stop and allow the court session to continue uninterrupted. At the same time, another magistrate court sitting at Shanzu directed the State to amend the charge sheet of the 41 victims of Shakahola, who are now being held as suspects. The 41 (28 women and 13 men) are believed to have been involved in the mysterious deaths of children at Shakahola.
