“[James] heard the boys still playing in the room, and he heard a bang ... and he says ‘oi, what’s that?’ and they said Jaylen has fallen,” Falcongreen said. “At one point they thought the child had swallowed this toy,” Falcongreen said. “So they provided first aid ... eventually the ambulance is called.”“The force required would be classified as severe because it’s caused quite a complex skull fracture.”Dr Maree Crawford, from the Queensland Children’s Hospital, said Jaylen’s injuries were more severe than what could be expected from a toddler running and slipping from his height of just 79 centimetres.
A second witness, forensic pathologist Dr Andrzej Kedziora, said during his autopsy he found other injuries, including fractures to Jaylen’s upper arms, which predated his brain injury. “I found a ... scientific paper, where there were 223 cases of accidental injuries in children, and they included high-speed car crashes, and falls from heights of at least from five metres, and among those 223 cases, there was apparently only one case of rib fractures.”
