PETALING JAYA: The Seremban Sessions Court has ordered four defendants, including the Malaysian government and the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) to pay compensation amounting to RM281,807.20 to the family of a ranger who died after being accidentally shot by colleagues during an operation in Kampung Durian Daun, Rembau, in 2018.
Judge Surita Budin made the decision on Monday in relation to a suit brought by the deceased Cyril Quing's wife Winnona Simon and their two children, Callista Wanda Cyril and Caliandra Wenzel Cyril in 2020, Malay language dailyThe deceased's family named four respondents in their lawsuit - operation head Mohamad Hakim Mohamed Khairuddin, 25; the Perhilitan state director, the Perhilitan director-general and the Malaysian government.
"This is because during the operation, Cyril was under the care and responsibility of the respondent to ensure safety during an operation involving firearms. "The court also found the second, third and fourth respondents were also responsible for the negligence of the first respondent," he toldOn Aug 29, 2018, the media reported the death of Cyril, 35, while he was involved in an operation with 16 other rangers.
During the operation, Cyril had suddenly run out of the forest asking for help after being shot in the right shoulder. Three of his colleagues then took him to the Rembau Health Clinic for treatment, but he was confirmed dead.
