The new SCOPE Act takes effect this Sunday, adding protections for kids online through age verification and stricter marketplace regulations but one non-profit is challenging it. Will a judge block it? #OnlineSafety #ConsumerProtection #SCOPEAct
– A Texas law designed to protect children from harmful and obscene online material has been partially blocked by a late Friday court ruling, just days before it was set to take effect., which stands for the Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment Act, is a piece of U.S. legislation introduced to enhance consumer protections against harmful online practices.
Judge Pitman’s decision grants an injunction against the enforcement of the monitoring and filtering provisions, citing concerns that these rules could infringe on First Amendment rights. However, the ruling did not block the entire law, meaning other aspects of the SCOPE Act, such as data collection rules and age verification requirements for platforms with significant amounts of adult content, remain in place.
The SCOPE Act was supposed to take effect on Sunday, Sept. 1, and would have required everyone to verify their age for social media. However, the non-profit, Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression filed a motion hoping a judge would block it.
