Pictures can’t convey the urgency of the live action that charged along the runway at Nicolas Di Felice’s fifth-anniversary show for Courrèges . The actual effect was all over social media in real time: there was a narrow fake road, and the sound of a loud ticking clock, the opener for the theme of “24 hours in the life of a Courrèges woman.
” It was an inspired device for depicting a round-the-clock wardrobe for the life of a girl who started off waking up in conceptual white bedsheets, then took off, tracking her progress through the streets of the city to work, to a club and into the night. The soundscape told the story: the noise of traffic, the sound of stilettos descending to the metro, the muffled noise of a rave going on as she approaches a club, the dancefloor and her leaving. Di Felice said backstage that the idea for the presentation had come from his re-watching “of one of my favorite Chantal Akerman films,. She’s considered one of the first queer francophone movie makers of the 1970s. The movie’s set in Brussels and follows a young lady through her day.” A perfect reference point, this: Belgium being Di Felice’s home country, plus it happening to coincide exactly with the dates during which André Courrèges was shaking up Paris fashion with his radical space-age modernism. But never mind that, really. So well established is Di Felice’s slick minimalism, sexiness and body-consciousness that it needs no thematic bolstering. The new life he’s brought to this brand is reality-based, a sharp youthful Parisian look comprising slim flared coats, A-line skirts, signature Courrèges jersey pieces and geometrically cutout pinafore dresses. Vinyl, one of the house staples, turned up knife-pleated into a dress and a skirt, highlights of the show. There’s a completeness, polish and optimism about this label that has made it accessible to young customers—and admired by fashion critics. Not many brands can boast of that. Congratulations are due to Di Felice for all of this. With his qualities, which he’s had a decent time to hone, one can’t help wondering if he’ll be destined for something bigger soon.
