Couple with Schlitterbahn roots — Tasha and Stuart Blythin — leaps back into New Braunfels tourism with RV resort called Camp Landa.
The newest venture from the family behind the Schlitterbahn brand was hatched during a cross-country trip in a recreational vehicle during the COVID -19 pandemic. Tasha Blythin — whose grandparents Billye and Bob Henry opened the first Schlitterbahn water park in New Braunfels in 1979 — and her husband Stuart set off with their four children on a two-month road trip. They visited 10 national parks across the western U.S. , as well as along the U.S. - Mexico and U.S. - Canada borders.
Juan Flores, GM of new Plaza hotel, sees bright future for S.A. hospitality industry They put what they learned into practice in April when they opened Camp Landa, an RV resort less than a mile from downtown New Braunfels. The 30-acre facility at 723 N. Walnut Ave. features 110 RV sites and five cabins.
San Antonio ranks second in study of affordable vacation destinations. Tasha: That was part of what we had learned, too, on our trip. You know, we go to Carlsbad Caverns, and we’re gonna go stay at the Carlsbad Caverns KOA. You’ve been driving all day, you get there, you set up. Well, Carlsbad Caverns is 45 minutes from the KOA. It’s like you traded off driving all day to then get back in the car and drive again to see the attraction. And it was always so exhausting.
As Houston Street grows downtown, so does landmark steakhouse Bohanan’s Stuart: It was a 50-plus-year-old family business. I think they just decided it was time for a change. Tasha: My dad and his siblings could pursue their own desires. They were getting to retirement age. That would probably be the full story of it. Q: What are the benefits of traveling in an RV? Stuart: Your stuff is with you. You have your own space.
