Man and woman detained in international sting operation after theft at Atrio - with stolen bottles including an 1806 Château d’Yquem priced at £298,225
A man and a woman, who were not named, were arrested on the border of Montenegro and Croatia after a nine-month investigation, police said on Tuesday. No date was given for their detention.
The woman checked into Atrio Restaurant Hotel – where rooms are £339 per night – using fake Swiss identity documents and had dinner with the man, police said. Later, the woman is said to have distracted staff by asking for some food to be made even though the kitchen was closed, while her accomplice went to the wine cellar and filled three bags with the bottles. He used hotel towels to make sure the bottles did not crack, police said.
“We don’t know anything officially. I hope they have recovered the bottles,” José Polo, part owner of the restaurant, toldHe said he had given the wine up for lost after the theft because it was a “very well organised robbery by specialists”. He added that it was often difficult to access “exclusive markets” for stolen wine
