Bacteria levels in water remain dangerously high south of Naval Air Station North Island, parts of Mission Bay and La Jolla, county says
San Diego County lifted a water contact closure for North Beach in Coronado Sunday after recent water quality samples met with state health standards, the Department of Environmental Health and Quality announced in a statement.
However, the county said the rest of the South Bay shoreline, from Pine Street in Coronado south to the U.S.-Mexico border, is still under a water contact closure until bacteria levels are low enough to be safe. Other areas around San Diego are under a county advisory. This includes Tidelands Park in Coronado, Campland and North Cove Vacation Isle in Mission Bay, La Jolla Cove and the La Jolla Children’s Pool. Beach goers are advised that bacteria levels in the water in these areas could cause illness.
Bacteria levels along the South Bay shoreline have been especially high since a Tijuana sewage pipelinein late July. Bacteria in ocean water is an indicator that pathogens — such as E. coli, Vibrio and salmonella — are also present. Exposure to these bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever, respiratory disease, meningitis and paralysis in humans.
Sewage drifting north from Mexico isn’t new for South Bay beach communities, but a new DNA-based testing standard implemented by the County in May is. The DNA tests produce results faster and are more sensitive than the previous test, which involved taking samples of ocean water then using it to grow cultures in a lab.
