Remembering country music legend Loretta Lynn, who was one of the great American writers of the 20th century. Loretta died this week at age 90.
FILE - Country music great Loretta Lynn poses for a portrait in September 2000 in Nashville, Tenn. Lynn, the Kentucky coal miner’s daughter who became a pillar of country music, died Tuesday at her home in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. She was 90.Twenty years ago, when Loretta Lynn was a spry 70 she talked to me about her life’s twisted relationship with time as we define it.
Lynn died Tuesday at her home in Tennessee at age 90. She made 21st century recordings that remained vital and full of thought and prickly energy. But her 20th century songbook was unprecedented for its presentation of a woman tired of tropes: familial, cultural, creative. Lynn told me she was around 3 years old when she heard her grandfather listening to “this talking machine,” playing a record of the Carter Family’s “Wildwood Flower.”
Nevertheless, she pulled no punches except for those that were literal. Her pugnacious offerings in “Fist City” felt unrehearsed even if the song was carefully written. She could convey an impulsive mood through a song that had been labored over. Don’t mess with her man, she sang in the song. Or the next destination would be combative.
