ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Fat Bear Week , an event that draws attention from over 100 countries and garnered over one million votes last year, will start next week. Fat Bear Week is a time when people can vote on some of the biggest and fattest brown bears at Katmai National Park and Preserve.
“You can cast for the bear that has gotten the fattest, the bear that looks like it gained the most weight between summer and fall, or you can vote for your favorite bear,” says Sarah Bruce, Katmai National Park and Preserve visual information specialist and media team lead. The brackets are still being put together, according to Bruce. Teams are currently out getting photos of the bears, who are getting bigger every day. Two bears who are currently being looked at joining the bracket this year are last year’s second placer, Chunk, and two-year champion, Grazer. “We will see if comes back in this bracket this year and takes it for the third year in a row or if folks will vote for a different bear who’s very, very fat,” Bruce said.The bears are expected to be larger and fatter this year due to the significant salmon run in Bristol Bay. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game“We’ve never seen so many fish in this river. There was almost not enough water for all of the fish. It was like you could walk across the river and never touch the water because you’re walking across fish backs. So really, really strong run this year.” Bruce says the reason they continue to see success in salmon runs is due to the knowledge given to them by the indigenous people in the area. “The Yupik and Subbiah people have been the original stewards of this land since time immemorial and without their traditional ecological knowledge. Without that, without their oral histories, the sockeye salmon run would not be as sustainable and as large as it is today.” While the winning bear doesn’t get an actual prize, Bruce says the whole point of this competition is to celebrate the survival of bears. “ eat enough fish, eat enough salmon in the summer, then their prize is surviving the winter. So a fat bear equals a healthy bear. So we are celebrating their success from the season,” Bruce said. The Fat Bear Junior Bracket will be revealed on Sept. 17 and voting will take place on Sept. 18 and 19.
