CAPE TOWN - Counselling sessions are continuing at Overberg High School in Caledon on Monday following the murder of a Grade 10 learner.

Deveney Nel's mother reported her missing on Wednesday and a police-led search party then found the 16-year-old's body in a storeroom at the school.Nel's murder has sent shockwaves through the country and once again reflects the prevalence of violent crime against women and children. The tragedy comes as the country marks Women's Month. The day is a tribute to over 20,000 women who marched to the Union Building o 9 August 1956 to protect the extension of the apartheid era’s pass laws to women.However, the period also puts the spotlight on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

The African National Congress Women's League's, Bongiwe Mkhwibiso, has called on the security cluster and the Department of Education to lodge an urgent investigation into safety and security at schools. She said it's become a major concern in the Overberg, where December statistics show a 6.8% rise in contact crimes including murder, attempted murder, sexual crime, assault and robbery.
