South County community will be holding its first by-district election in November
National City Councilmember Mona Rios announced Tuesday she is retiring from politics after more than a decade of public service, leaving a seat up for grabs in the November election.“I thought this would be the best time for me to make the decision to leave,” she said Wednesday.
So far, Ditas Yamane, chairperson of the city’s Planning Commission and Housing Advisory Commission, has filed to run for District 3. Morrison, who was elected to the City Council in 1992 and has served as mayor three times between 2006-18, is up against current mayor Alejandra Sotelo-Solis and Jose Rodriguez, a council member who now represents District 2 on the city’s north portion between districts 1 and 3. Elections for districts 2 and 4, which Vice Mayor Marcus Bush represents, will be held in November 2024.
