The council has lodged an injunction with the High Court over the Home Office plans to house asylum seekers in the hotel

But South Hunsley ward councillors Julie Abraham and Margaret Corless have both said the hotel, in Ferriby High Road, is too far away from shops and other facilities. They added locals felt they had not been consulted or given enough notice about the plans which have also seen reservations and functions at the hotel suddenly cancelled.

The lawyer said: “East Riding Council wouldn’t have had a clue the Home Office was even looking at a hotel because they don’t consult local authorities beforehand, Hull City Council wasn’t consulted on the Royal Hotel either. “The hotel will feed them but they’re not going to get a menu to chose from, much of the hotel will be food they’re not used to or might not like. So the charities then have to make their money stretch further and further, because our funding doesn’t increase just because more people arrive into the area. The asylum seekers that hotels like the one in North Ferriby would house are waiting for a decision on their claim for asylum.

“So we’re now in a situation where we’ve got Afghans who arrived in the UK after the Taliban took over the country in September last year who are still in hotels now. It’s a person’s right to claim asylum under the UN’s Human Rights Declaration, Britain was one of the first countries to sign up to that declaration and its Refugee Convention.“The Convention recognises that someone might have to break laws while fleeing persecution, so if they make an asylum claim then they haven’t broken the law.
