With these changes, both workers and companies will benefit, positioning themselves to adapt to rapidly changing technologies—most of which we can’t even imagine today.
Now, the gap between the skills that industry demands and what universities teach is even wider. To keep up with the accelerating pace of technological innovation, colleges and universities need a paradigm shift in how they build and deliver curricula.
How can they do that? In CS, this looks like designing courses that teach the languages, frameworks and developer tools—like GitHub—that software developers in the industry use today, as well as emerging technologies and skills for new roles like prompt engineers, machine learning engineers and AI infrastructure. At the same time, CS programs should continue to do what they're great at : teaching the fundamentals of the discipline, like algorithms and data structures.
Today, many employers adhere to the “learn and work” model: They expect candidates for roles at their company to learn all the required skills first, then perform the job. However, over the course of an individual’s working life—well upwards ofin the U.S.—technologies and the skills required to make optimal use of those technologies will undergo major transformations. Learning skills just once is no longer an option.
For industry at large, this requires a fundamental shift in work culture to one that encourages lifelong learning, fosters curiosity and rewards the ability to adapt quickly. Employers can do this by investing in ongoing upskilling and reskilling opportunities to fill skill gaps on their teams and prepare their employees for the jobs of tomorrow.
With these changes, both workers and companies will benefit, positioning themselves to adapt effectively to rapidly changing technologies—most of which we can’t even begin to imagine today.
