We’re not going to solve every problem by being smarter or through the use of technology.
Our problems will be solved through hard work, cooperation, empathy, humility, debate and a myriad of other ways. In that sense, the assistive use cases for AI are much more interesting than the replacement use cases. But there is a coming shift in which the use of AI will create greater productivity for a lot of people in knowledge work who are used to owning their own productivity.
And this leads us to a fundamental question that arises whenever there's a technological advance: When people get more productive, who owns the surplus? Is there a way to use the surplus created by AI in a way that's meaningful, or will we end up as floating blobs void of humanity staring at screens all day?
Films express the fear and anxiety as well as the excitement and possibility that come with new technology. As WALL-E so beautifully illustrated, until we can train AI to be empathic and until it possesses authentic humanity, it's just a tool.
