The U.S.-supplied NASAMS 'is a more modern, reliable system,' Ian Williams, deputy director of the CSIS' Missile Defense Project, told Newsweek.

from the U.S., and Austin revealed Wednesday that those NASAMS were now operational.

Ian Williams, deputy director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Missile Defense Project, toldthat the Soviet-era S-300 is older, bigger and has a heavier interceptor than its U.S. counterpart. He explained that the S-300 systems were acquired from Russia some time ago and may have had"questionable" maintenance over the decades.

The manner in which the S-300 is believed to have malfunctioned is also extremely unusual because misfires with any type of missile typically occur directly after launch, Williams said.John Erath, senior policy director for the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, also told"S-300, like most Russian hardware, has had its capabilities significantly hyped," Erath said."Its actual record is spotty.
