A new theory suggests that the perceived acceleration of the universe's expansion might not be due to mysterious dark energy, but instead to 'bubbles' of spacetime where time passes at different rates. This 'timescape' cosmology could explain discrepancies in how fast the universe appears to be expanding in different regions, creating the illusion of acceleration when observing distant objects.
