Innovative Queens hip hop group is welcomed into the Hallowed Hall of Rock
Could they kick it? Yes, they could! A Tribe Called Quest to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of FameAli Shaheed Muhammad, Q-Tip and Phife and Jarobi White are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as of A Tribe Called Quest. John “Q-Tip” Fareed was the group’s producer and leader, the late Malik “Phife Dawg” Taylor was the MC, Jarobi White the host and “mystic man” and Ali Shaheed Muhammad served as the DJ and coproducer. They came together in Queens, N.Y.
Fellow Native Tongue members De La Soul had already broken all the previous molds and declared the start of the “D.A.I.S.Y. Age” with their 1989 unabashedly fun, silly, positive and surreal debut “3 Ft. High & Rising.” There was no “truck jewelry,” or gritty ghetto survival tales, no cool tricked-out cars , no cadre of limber dancers, no stone-faced neighborhood denizens standing around burning garbage cans with scary dogs on chain leashes or any of the other common testosterone-heavy video tropes of the time.
Q-Tip also had a good eye for talent and was the first to share the work of a young Detroit producer named Jay Dee with the hip-hop world as part of the production team, “The Ummah,” that produced the group’s third album, “Beats, Rymes & Life.” That young producer and rapper would become a hip-hop and beat production icon himself under his better-known non-de-plume, Dilla.
“You can be a Black man and lose all your soul, You can be white and groove, but don’t crap the roll, See my s**t is universal if you got knowledge of dolo, Or delf or self.”“Top notch, baby, never comin’ less, Sky’s the limit, you gots to believe up in Quest, Sit back, relax, get up out the path, If not that, here’s a dance floor, come move that ass, Non-believers, you can check the stats, I roll with Shaheed and the brother Abstract.
