In a thread on the DC Comics Subreddit, fan Artseid postulated a fascinating, if not terrifying, scenario: what if the Spectre turned evil? Artseid believed that if the Spectre went rogue, then he would be a “headache” for the Justice League and the rest of the DC Universe. Artseid brought the question up to spur discussion of other heroes who would be bad news if they became evil, but fans instead used the thread to discuss the Spectre, and how badly he has been handled by DC Comics since his first appearance. The Spectre Has a Long History in the DC Universe Writers and Artists Have Struggled to Make the Spectre Interesting When the Spectre debuted in 1940’s More Fun Comics #52, there was not anyone else like him in American comics. While supernatural characters had been a part of the comic book landscape since the debut of Doctor Occult in 1935, the Spectre represented a coming of age for the idea of mystical heroes. The Spectre, who was once corrupt police detective Jim Corrigan, was murdered, but his soul was sent back to Earth by the Presence (DC’s stand-in for the Christian god) to punish evildoers. From there, the supernatural side of the DC Universe exploded. The Spectre was created by Bernard Bailey and Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel.
