This would be a massive hire.

The Ravens are 7-8, with three losses in their past four games. What happens if they miss the playoffs? Could owner Steve Bisciotti decide to move on from Harbaugh, 63, who has led Baltimore since 2008? Harbaugh just signed a three-year extension this past offseason.

So he is under contract through 2028. Which opens up the possibility of a trade. Ultimately, Bisciotti would be foolish to fire or trade Harbaugh, if only because of this big issue: Is he actually going to find a better option in this hiring cycle? The obvious answer is probably not. But maybe Bisciotti decides it’s time for a fresh voice, as the Ravens try to finally reach a Super Bowl with Lamar Jackson. If Harbaugh is available — even via trade — the Giants should jump at the chance to hire him . Ditto for the Steelers’ Mike Tomlin, of course, but it seems highly unlikely Pittsburgh, which is 9-6, will want to trade him. And he definitely won’t get fired. The Giants haven’t hired a proven winner as their head coach since Tom Coughlin in 2004. Three of their four post-Coughlin hires were newcomers to the job — Ben McAdoo, Joe Judge and Daboll. The fourth, Pat Shurmur, had a 9-23 record over two seasons with the Browns. So yes, it makes sense that the Giants would want to target Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman, even though he has never coached in the NFL in any capacity. And sure, they should kick the tires on Mike McCarthy. But clearly, Harbaugh is a much better option than both of those guys, especially since you can likely forget about Tomlin being available. Could the Packers — who are 9-5-1 — move on from Matt LaFleur? He would be another fascinating option for the Giants. And don’t forget about this enormous factor, if the Giants want to chase Harbaugh and/or LaFleur : Would they want to work with general manager Joe Schoen? Surely not. Even absent that question, Schoen — whose team is 3-24 since last October — has done more than enough to get fired after what is currently a 2-13 season with nine straight losses. But in the meantime, Schoen is running the Giants’ coaching search, as co-owner John Mara — who heads day-to-day operations — battles cancer. Schoen’s contract runs through next season. Odds are, the Ravens and Packers will retain Harbaugh and LaFleur, if only because there aren’t really any better options out there. Still, both would fit exactly what the Giants need, especially if they make their head coaching vacancy all the more enticing by firing Schoen.Notre Dame reportedly will not face rival they have faced 96 times for a unique reasonDarryl Slater is an NFL reporter — writing about the Giants, Jets, and more — at NJ Advance Media .
