From horse-drawn carriages to giant passenger planes, there's no doubt transportation technologies grow and adapt to the changing world. The question is: Where do we go from here?

Published: Apr. 30, 2024 at 11:21 AM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - A Colorado-based inventor wants to disrupt worldwide transportation paradigms with a cheaper and faster method for travel and shipping. And he thinks Fairbanks could be the epicenter for that effort.

Accelerated by electronic motors, the capsules would hit those unprecedented velocities by leveraging the presence of magnets and the absence of air. The technology creates a vacuum within the network while materials in the walls of the tubes compete to generate and maintain magnetic fields that prevent the outside of capsules from touching the inside of the tubes.

The proposed tubes, roughly 5-feet in diameter, could run above ground or underground, depending on topography, though Oster estimates the underground construction would cost three times as much money. Even if the technology functions without flaws, Oster and his associates will need trillions of dollars from investors, he said, as well as skilled workers to build out the network.

“Since ET3 is silent and pays the right-of-way owners, we believe people will want it in their backyards for the income and convenience of being able to use it,” he said. Specifically, Oster said there’s a 3.6-mile section of dirt road along the Tanana River levee south of the Richardson Highway that’s well-suited for the smaller-scale maglev tube. If successful, a follow-up phase could connect Fairbanks International Airport to Eielson Air Force Base.
