Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase expresses a personal wish for a new Final Fantasy movie, fueled by interest from Hollywood creators. While no official plans are in place, the possibility of an adaptation of the beloved RPG franchise remains intriguing.
Adaptations of video games are experiencing a resurgence. It appears every video game franchise is being considered for a TV show or film. Long before this current wave of adaptations, Final Fantasy received the Hollywood treatment in 2001. The less said about that the better, but it seems at least some at Square Enix are interested in a new Final Fantasy movie.
In an interview, Kitase said, \u201cWe don\u2019t have anything officially planned and so this is just strictly my personal sort of wish, but yeah, I\u2019ve heard about various Hollywood directors and actors playing, and many creators also respect the title. I\u2019ve been hearing things about creators out there who are very interested in the property, who love the Final Fantasy VII universe, and so yeah, personally I\u2019d love to see something that comes out of these creators, in terms of like a cinematic or some kind of visual piece.\u201d For the time being, readers should remember this is only Kitase\u2019s personal desire and doesn\u2019t necessarily mean a movie or TV show is imminent. While an adaptation of the fan-favorite game seems like a logical next step, there have been no official announcements. It\u2019s entirely possible that could change, especially once the final entry in the trilogy is released. Final Fantasy VII was released in 1997 on the original PlayStation. At that point, the series had existed for nearly 10 years, but the game truly catapulted Final Fantasy into the mainstream. While there have been many popular Final Fantasy games since, few have had the cultural impact of Final Fantasy VII. The Square Enix RPG has spawned spin-off games, merchandise, and even an animated movie released in 2005. A future Final Fantasy movie could be animated like the 2005 film. While a movie might not be happening anytime soon, it would align with Square Enix\u2019s desire to broaden the appeal of its games
