A Class I recall has been issued for organic eggs sold at Costco due to potential salmonella contamination. The recalled eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations across five southeastern states.
The FDA has classified a recall of organic eggs sold at Costco as a Class I recall, the highest risk level, due to the potential for salmonella contamination. Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based organic egg supplier, said the 24-count organic, pasture-raised eggs were sold under the Kirkland Signature brand. The eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations across Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee starting November 22.
The company stated the eggs were mistakenly packaged and distributed to retailers instead of being sold directly to consumers. Additional controls and retraining have been implemented to prevent this from happening again, according to Handsome Brook Farms. So far, there have been no reported illnesses linked to the recall. Salmonella can cause severe infections, especially in children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. People who purchased the recalled eggs should discard them or return them to Costco for a full refund
