An annual survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation finds the average price of a dozen items for Thursday's cookout are up 5% from a year ago.
The cost of a July Fourth cookout is heading higher this year, driven mainly by persistent inflation and supply challenges. Backyard grillers across the U.S. can expect to spend $71.22 on a cookout for 10 people, up 5% from a year ago and about 30% from five years ago, according to an annual survey by the American Farm Bureau Federation .
The increases are largely in line with inflation in recent years and come despite the fact overall food inflation has fallen dramatically this year. Grocery prices now are increasing at a rate of 1% a year — nearly back to their pre-pandemic pace — after topping out at 13.5% in August 2022. So while food generally won’t be less expensive at the grocery store, shoppers won’t be seeing the spiraling prices of the past few years, according to economists.
