While this year’s Cherry Blossom Festival in Cupertino will continue to highlight Japanese traditions, recognition is also being given to a more contemporary cultural movement.
Los Gatos Kiwanis’ Easter egg hunt moves to new location The festival, set for April 25-26 at Memorial Park, celebrates Cupertino’s sister city relationship with Toyokawa, Japan. New this year is a cosplay meet-up, set for Saturday at 2 p.m. A gallery of Toyokawa student artwork from the sister cities’ annual art exchange program will be on display at the nearby Quinlan Community Center. The center will also host music and dance performances, cultural exhibits, demonstrations and interactive activities. Japanese cultural arts and crafts vendors, a pictorial timeline of Cupertino’s 47-year sister city relationship with Toyokawa, and Shogi instruction and demonstration will be grouped at the Japanese Artisan Pavilion, located at the Cupertino Senior Center. Outdoor entertainment includes Taiko drum groups, Japanese dancers, various martial arts and musical performances. Children’s activities feature games, arts and crafts, and a petting zoo. Attendees can browse arts and crafts display and connect with special interest groups, including Japanese dog and koi clubs, and take a photo with Toyokawa’s mascots. The festival food court will have offerings including sushi, gyoza, mochi, teriyaki chicken bowls, bento boxes and shave ice, with iced coffee, boba drinks, beer, sake, plum wine, sodas and lemonade to wash it all down. Food trucks will also be on site. The free Cherry Blossom Festival will run 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. both days, with free parking at De Anza College lots A and B.
