Corsicana Artist and Writer Residency to celebrate a decade of creativity
The 100 West building in downtown Corsicana offers both private and communal studios, a wood shop, a gallery and a residency program for artists and writers.as a renovation of a former Odd Fellows building in downtown Corsicana.
the 100 West building will mark its 10th anniversary with a day of open studios that recognizes the impact the project has made on the community. “I would say it’s unfolding in ways we never imagined,” founder Kyle Hobratschk said. “100 West set the tone for everything.” The celebration starts at noon with open studios for six artists, a video presentation and resident writers’ presentation at 4 p.m. A book signing is set for 2 p.m.Kyle Hobratschk, painter, printmaker, furniture maker and founder of 100 West, an artist residency and collective in Corsicana. Over the decade, the program has attracted creatives from around the world, sparked additional renovations nearby and nourished the creative soul of a small Texas town. As the SMU-trained Hobratschk presciently said in 2012: “At the end of the day, or at the end of the decade, this building is going to be a work of its own — not just of mine, but of people I find along the way who want to come and share this space.” It all started when Hobratschk and several artists-friends-partners restored and renovated the three-story building, circa 1898, into their version of an artists’ residency, studio and exhibition space. The project expanded to 14 properties that have been restored, Hobratschk said. “What was a very somewhat quiet and insular presence has shifted into a rather proud relationship with the city, and our downtown shopkeepers,” he said..
