Coronation Street star Helen Worth has announced she is leaving the ‘most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world,’ after playing iconic character Gail for five decades
Actress Helen Worth has delivered a heartbreaking goodbye message after announcing that she has quit her role in Coronation Street after five decades. Helen, who is 73 and currently celebrating 50 years as Gail, said in her announcement: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.”
Helen added: “The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.” The actress, who was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 for services to drama, began her acting career in 1963 when she was just 12 and going by the name Helen Wiggleworth. She first appeared in an episode of classic police series Z-Cars and then had uncredited roles as a teenager in classic movies Oliver! And The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.
Gail’s first husband in the soap was Brian Tilsley, who was murdered, and she then went on to marry younger partner Martin Platt, followed by Richard Hillman, who turned out to be a serial killer. Gail’s luck with men didn’t improve, as she next married Joe McIntyre and found herself in prison for his murder, then she married Michael Rodwell, who she first came into contact with when he burgled her house.
