Reginald Montez Thames, a corrections officer at the Monroe County Jail, and Beverly Jean Castophney, the girlfriend of a convicted drug dealer, pleaded guilty to conspiring to smuggle drugs into the jail.

An Atmore man who worked as a corrections officer at the Monroe County Jail and the girlfriend of a convicted drug dealer admitted Thursday that they conspired to smuggle drugs into the lockup. Reginald Montez Thames and Beverly Jean Castophney pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to conspiracy and providing contraband in prison.

According to the defendants’ written plea agreements, law enforcement officers saw Castophney in January 2023 place a package on Thames’ vehicle in the jail parking lot. Castophney, 37, admitted that she was in a relationship with Vincent Bryce Lambert Jr., a Monroeville man who had been sentenced in July 2022 to eight years in prison for possession with intent to distribute drugs. He was awaiting transfer to a federal prison. Thames, 24, admitted that he agreed to deliver the package to Lambert for $600. It contained Adderall and cigarettes, along with a cell phone and a charger – all prohibited by the jail.Castophney also used a CashApp in her son’s name because her account had been closed for gambling, according to the plea agreement. Lambert, 38, pleaded guilty last month and is scheduled to be sentenced in February. A judge on Thursday set sentencing for Thames and Castophney for March. The maximum sentencing is 10 years in prison, but prosecutors have agreed to recommend leniency
