The 29-year-old was reported missing two days before he was found dead on a property near Bourke, NSW, in 2019. A coroner has found 'more should have been done' to find him.
Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame says police could have done more during the 2019 search for a missing Indigenous man in Western NSW.Magistrate Grahame has recommended NSW Police adopt Queensland Police's search and rescue model and provide additional cultural and sensitive awareness training for officers.
Dion Moore, 29, was found dead in bushland at West Mooculta, about 10 kilometres east of Bourke, on January 7, 2019. Magistrate Grahame was "appalled" to discover police wasted time on the day Mr Moore was reported missing. In handing down her findings at the Bourke Courthouse, Magistrate Grahame said she was concerned police made a "number of poor decisions" during the course of the investigation.
Magistrate Graham recommended the NSW Police Commissioner examine and consider adopting Queensland Police's search and rescue command structure. It was also requested NSW Police consider providing officers with training on trauma-informed communications with families, and particularly First Nations families, when they were concerned about a missing person.Mr Moore was described by family members during the five-day inquest as "happy-go-lucky, always up for a good time, a laugh and a joke"."Dion's mother, Jennifer, told the court he was the third of her children to die too young," Magistrate Grahame said.
