State police were serving a warrant at the 47-year-old man's home when the Wednesday morning shooting happened.
A 47-year-old man has been identified as the person who Pennsylvania State Police shot and killed Wednesday morning at a Lebanon County home. John McDowell was inside a home on the first block of Gable Drive in Jackson Township around 6 a.
m. Wednesday whenwent inside, according to the Lebanon County Coroner’s Office and state police. The warrant was related to a child pornography investigation, according to Trooper Ethan Brownback. The coroner’s office said McDowell lived at the home. After entering the house, Brownback said McDowell confronted troopers “in a manner which resulted in members discharging their firearms.” Police have not said if McDowell was armed or what prompted the use of lethal force. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner’s office said an autopsy was performed Thursday morning. McDowell’s cause and manner of death are pending.. A public records search showed the man had no criminal history in Pennsylvania.Around 4:50 p.m., troopers carried at least five boxes labeled “Evidence Rifle Box” and “Evidence — Handle With Care” to the area. Those boxes were eventually loaded into the back of a PSP truck. Minutes later, the coroner’s office removed McDowell’s body — covered in a white sheet — from the home. The man’s parents told PennLive they are driving to Lebanon County from North Carolina, where they live. They are expected to be in the area by Thursday. State police have not provided any other information on the child pornography investigation or the shooting, which is being investigated in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General.
