SINGAPORE - Hindu families celebrating the Tamil New Year, or Puthandu, on Tuesday should do so at home, said the Hindu Endowments Board on Monday.

The arrangement comes as all places of worship will be closed till May 4 and social gatherings disallowed as part of the Covid-19 circuit breaker measures. For Ms Dalveer Kaur Sidhu, who observes Vaisakhi, the celebrations are very much a community affair, as it is traditional for families to visit gurdwaras, or Sikh temples, where religious and cultural activities are held.

"They can perform a service for old folks who are staying home alone and feeling lonely. It is definitely not the same, but we are making the best of the situation," she said.
