Gregg Garfield became one of the first Americans to fall seriously ill with Covid-19 and defied doctors' odds to survive - but lost most of his fingers in the process

Gregg Garfield lost almost all of his fingers after becoming one of the first Americans to fall seriously-ill with coronavirus

A coronavirus ‘patient zero’ who became one of the first Americans to catch the disease says he has now lost almost all of his fingers as a result. Gregg Garfield, 54, from Los Angeles lost all his right fingers and almost all his left digits after Covid-19 left him on a ventilator for 31 days. Garfield, who caught the disease during a February skiing trip to Northern Italy, faces multiple surgeries to improve the condition of his hands. But he says the joy at surviving coronavirus outweighs the damage to his limbs – and warned others that the same horror could befall them too.
