As of now, the Met Gala will go ahead as planned on May 4. But the coronavirus has set the fashion world on edge

COVID-19 — the disease caused by the new coronavirus — continues to spread, and public-health officials have now bypassed discussions of containment for discussions of mitigation.

This is bound to be a question as spring rolls in, not least for fashion’s biggest and most international party of the year: the Met Gala. Famous enough to have inspired its own documentary and desirable enough to sell out its hundreds of $30,000 tickets , the Met Gala draws the most powerful people in fashion to the Upper East Side year after year.

As of now, the gala, scheduled for May 4, will go ahead as planned. “We are proceeding as planned and look forward to a wonderful evening,” said Nancy Chilton, the chief external relations officer of the Costume Institute. “We will of course continue to keep a close eye on the situation.

That said, COVID-19 preparations and response have set the fashion world on edge. Several teams of U.S. fashion editors decamped from Paris Fashion Week early, citing concerns. On Monday, the Italian government essentially locked down the entire country, extending the weekend’s restrictions on the northern region of Lombardy, which includes Milan, a fashion capital where Versace, Prada, and many of the most famous Italian labels are headquartered.

Outside of fashion, the South by Southwest festival and the Indian Wells tennis tournament have been canceled already; the Cannes Film Festival is proceeding as planned, as organizers continue to monitor the situation.
