People in the Bronx are fighting for their lives and their livelihoods as businesses deemed nonessential continue to struggle during coronavirus lockdown.

Caceres is the brand manager at Bronx Native, a retail store founded by his childhood friend Amaurys Grullon.

Although his family has a history of high blood pressure, the 25-year-old Caceres is otherwise healthy. He still doesn't know how he caught the virus. "I couldn't breathe — I was literally just gasping for air," Caceres said. " I would just take a few steps and it felt like I ran a marathon." People are fighting for their lives and their livelihoods as the virus rips through the borough and businesses deemed nonessential by the state have remained closed for eight weeks now in an effort to contain the epidemic.

The store, located in Mott Haven, sells apparel, accessories and acts as community space to the neighborhood, hosting everything from comedy to financial literacy classes. Business was good until the pandemic, Grullon said.
