A shopping mall in Berlin, Germany.Eurozone businesses were little troubled by an outbreak of the coronavirus in China, and the measures taken to contain it, according to a monthly survey of sentiment carried out by the European Commission.
That response has the potential to sharply reduce the number of Chinese tourists visiting Europe, as well as lowering exports of goods to Chinese buyers, and the availability of Chinese-made inputs that are essential for the production of finished goods at factories around the continent. As a result, the Economic Sentiment Indicator for the eurozone—an aggregate measure of consumer and business confidence—rose to 103.5 in February from 102.6 in January, reaching its highest level since May 2019. It remained above the long-term average of 100.0, with the series having started in 1990.
The pickup in confidence is likely a response to the easing of some uncertainties that faced businesses throughout 2019.In early January, the U.S. and China sealed a trade agreement that paused a series of tit-for-tat tariff hikes, which European businesses feared could escalate.
